Local Voters Got It Right

Robbie had a bit of a close call when it came to voting on Thursday. Laura and I had voted earlier in the day but Robbie left for work before the polling stations opened and he went to visit his friend in hospital after work, so we had a last minute dash to the polling station when he got back to Northampton. He made it with ten minutes to spare.

I was fairly happy with the result locally, our MP lost her seat. She was a complete waste of space, she was only interested in headlines and photo opportunities, there was no substance and no respect for real people. When she attended school events she was always late arriving and as soon as she had elbowed her way into the newspaper photo she was gone before the camera flash died away. Other important visitors took time to talk to the children, but she was to 'important' for that! When Emily was in middle school she wrote to her and the other local MP about a proposed change from a three tier to a two tier education system. The other MP replied with a personal letter and followed up as more information became available. but all our MP managed was a printed postcard to say she had received the letter. People have long memories and that insignificant schoolgirl is now a voter!

I think we must have been a target seat for the Liberals, I certainly felt targeted, in fact it felt like harassment! They waged a war of paper against the voters, almost every day we got more junk mail from them and as the election loomed we got two or three items a day. What a waste, we didn't read them, our recycling bin is conveniently located next to our post box! They get a thumbs down from me for not being green and an even bigger thumbs down for being annoying. I had to laugh, after all that effort they still came third!

An Image To Live Up To

They say that people get to look like their pets, but an incident a couple of days ago left me wondered if people become like the images that the media create for them? Spitting Image used to portray John Major as a grey man who tucked his vest into his pants and was totally boring. For a while it seemed as if the real man had morphed into his spitting image character, but he had the last laugh when it eventually came out that he'd had a long lasting affair with Edwina Curry. He wasn't such a grey man after that, to borrow a phrase from Fred Flintstone - that takes intestinal fortitude!

The road where we live is not a main road, but it is very busy and I usually I have to pull in near the house until the road clears, then I can swing the car out and reverse back onto the drive. A couple of days ago I was waiting at the side of the road when a mauve car drove slowly down the middle of the road. It caught my attention because the car was a horrible colour and I wondered what sort of idiot would drive down the middle of a busy road. He seemed to stay there dithering in the middle of the road for ages so I got a good look at the driver, I summed him up as a socks and sandals type. Finally he got out of my way and I was able to park on the drive, but as I got out of the car I heard tapping from further along the road. I looked in that direction and noticed that the mauve car had parked (miles from the kerb) and the driver (who surprise surprise was wearing socks and sandals) was attempting to erect a vote Liberal sign. If they can't drive and look as if they got dressed in the dark it doesn't exactly inspire confidence in their ability to run the country!

You Can't Be Serious!

Last week Robbie insisted that I had lost his favourite yellow top, allegedly he had searched everywhere and he couldn't find it. I hadn't touched his T-shirt, and I knew that it wouldn't be far away so I didn't take much notice of Robbie. The next thing I knew he arrived home from work with a new seriously yellow top, it was so yellow it almost knocked you over! He claimed that everyone at work loved it - maybe they are all colourblind! I didn't like it, it gave me a headache just looking at it, and anyway after all the drivel emanating from the Liberal Democrat conference this week I don't want to see anything yellow for a very long time. Surprisingly as soon as he had replaced his 'lost' top the original reappeared, I have my own conspiracy theory about that!

Robbie has been in a serious strop recently, and in the process of acknowledging that he had said some deeply unpleasant things he offered to have his mouth sewn up, it will not happen of course, but it is such a tempting thought! Unfortunately Robbie and silence are strangers to each other.
