2013 arrived with a bang or to be more accurate it arrived with an irritating cacophony of bangs from fireworks which began way before midnight and went on for far too long afterwards. I don't approve of fireworks at New Year, they are a fairly recent intrusion into our new year celebrations, when I was young fireworks we only had fireworks on 5th November. It is a pity we can't go back to the way things used to be, in fact it I would be happier if they banned them completely except for organised displays because they are dangerous and they frighten pets and other animals
Yesterday we spent the day at my mum's house celebrating her birthday. It was a real house full, my brother, his partner, my two little nephews, as well as my family. It was such a lovely day, my youngest nephew has just learned to walk and he spent the day showing off his new skill. His big brother who is four and a half enjoyed lots of attention from his grown up cousins. Today was a perfect start to the new year, my mum and stepfather spent the day with us, it was a nice relaxed family time. So we spent the last day of the old year and the first day of the new year with some of the people who matter most to us, our family. Tomorrow we will be back at work and the I will be up at the crack of dawn to drop Robbie at the station. I don't really mind, I have some very happy memories of Christmas and the New Year, we have to get back to work and the normal day to day routine because the bills will not pay themselves. For now Robbie is making the most of his freedom, he is sitting at the table playing with his Lego! When I have finished writing for the blog I am going to answer the first question in my five year question and answer journal.

Where have all the years gone?
I can remember exactly what I was doing 21 years ago yesterday, I was giving birth to my daughter. I remember it vividly because my husband complained that he couldn't cope with the labour because his chair was uncomfortable - I would willingly have swapped places!! I didn't realise at the time that our second daughter was born on the anniversary of the queen's coronation, I was more concerned that she would be young in her year when she went to school (which has not caused her any problems). Having a birthday in early June has was a good thing because it coincided with half term and we were always on holiday in Cornwall for her birthday. We have some very special memories of beech birthdays and trips to the pony centre to see her favourite pony Munchkin.
The first time that I realised that there was a connection with the queen was in 2002 when the queen celebrated her golden jubilee. We were in Cornwall and we had a wonderful view of the beacon that was lit a Trevose Head, there was a firework display too. This time my daughter went to London on the day before her birthday to celebrate with her friend and to enjoy some of the excitement of the jubilee celebrations. I think she rather likes sharing her special day with the queen.
Significant anniversaries always leave me wondering where all the time has gone. How can my little girl be 21? it doesn't seem possible. I have so many happy memories (and embarrassing photos) of those growing up years and I am very proud of the young woman she has become. On the subject of embarrassing photos, there are a couple of me dressed as Britannia for the queen's silver jubilee, where has the time gone. I expect the queen asks herself the same question when she looks back on her long reign. It can't be easy to live your life in the spotlight with people feeling that they have the right to criticise and comment on every aspect of her life. We may not have a perfect system, but when I look around and see what other countries have instead, I am glad that we have a monarchy.

Scary Shoes
Robbie enjoyed his birthday very much, it would have been nice to have him home a bit earlier, but things don't always work out as planned (especially when London Midland are involved!). We had a happy evening together and he was able to tell me all about his day, it seemed to involve a lot food so perhaps it is a good thing that birthdays only happen once a year! He had two breakfasts, a lovely lunch and his favourite meal in the evening, no wonder he was too full to have any birthday cake! So we decided to save the cake until today.
Life with Robbie is never dull, I have learnt to expect the unexpected, but last night I was lost for words. Watching Robbie try on his new Dr Martens was a surreal experience. He was wearing a white T-shirt and his favourite very bright and very baggy M&M design PJ bottoms when he decided to try on his new Dr Martens. The shoes are white with brown trim and in my opinion they are absolutely horrible, but Robbie fell in love with them and because I love him very much I bought them for him as an early birthday present. He sat for a little while just stroking and admiring the shoes, then he decided to try them on.
He deliberated about the colour of the laces for a few minutes, he asked if I thought the white or the brown laces would look best. It really made no difference, the shoes would still look horrible, but I chose brown, so Robbie decided on white. The shoes looked so wrong, the look was not helped by the black socks that he was wearing. Not to mention the M&M PJ bottoms. He walked up and down the lounge, one hand on his hip and asked me what I thought. I am rarely lost for words, but on this occasion I was speechless. What I was actually thinking was that he looked like a cross between Larry Grayson and Phil Mitchell, but perhaps it wasn't the moment to say so!
My heart sank when he announced that he would be wearing his new shoes to work today, I am not sure the railways are ready for a shock like that, but I couldn't change his mind. He is wearing them with jeans and a casual shirt, personally I think they are hideous but I will leave you to decide.......

I'm not 40, I'm eighteen with 22 years experience - Author Unknown
All too soon it was time for him to get ready for work. It would have been nice to have a long lazy day together, but the 'real world' dictated otherwise. Before long Robbie was dressed in his dark suit with a smart white shirt and his new 'keep calm and carry on' cufflinks. He had stashed his Lego minifigures in his briefcase along with a set of farm themed novelty erasers. I had bought them to remind him of our trips to the Farm Shop and he seemed delighted with them, apparently he used to collect erasers - why does that not surprise me!
He was careful to reassure me that he isn't going to change just because he is 40, I don't think he is very keen on the idea of becoming old and sensible. He needn't worry, according to Jerry M. Wright "The first sign of maturity is the discovery that the volume knob also turns to the left." If that is true there is danger of Robbie becoming more mature that any time soon, he still likes his music loud and annoying.
You can't turn back the clock. But you can wind it up again. Bonnie Prudden

Be on the alert to recognize your prime at whatever time of your life it may occur - Muriel Spark
Robbie has a birthday coming up this week, much to his surprise he is going to be 40! So after another challenging week at work, his birthday celebrations began yesterday with a trip to the Doc Shop. My mum had given him money to buy himself a pair of boots. It was a lovely drive and it was nice to have a whole day together and to be able to please ourselves what we did.
When we got to the Doc Shop Robbie spotted some shoes that he liked, but they didn't have his size. Then he seized upon a pair of black and white boots covered in a sort of zebra hair material (not real zebra skin!). His eyes lit up as he stroked the boots, he really wanted them, but I'm afraid that my involuntary groan of horror put him off. He already has one pair of DM's that he can't wear in daylight, so another seemed a bit excessive, and then of course there was the question of how to keep them clean........ I cant help it, I am just more practical than Robbie, but when I stopped to think about it my mum would have wholeheartedly approved of black and white Zebra print boots, when it comes to shoes (and clothes) she and Robbie are on the same wavelength!
Robbie bounced around the shop like Tigger and he fell in love with a couple of other designs, but they did not have his size and he decided against the zebra print boots. He chose to save the money and to go back in a couple of weeks when they have had more stock delivered. He likes the thought of going back again and in the meantime he can enjoy spending the money in his head many times over.
I let him choose what else he would like to do that day, and he chose to have lunch at the Apothocoffee Shop in Earls Barton and of course to spend a little while in the book department at Jeyes! It was a very nice unhurried day and as always it was fun just enjoying happy moments together.

The Things You See When Travelling By Train
Saturday proved to be a very special day. It involved an early start for a Saturday morning and I have to confess to feeling a bit nervous as we boarded the train because we were attending the birthday 'event' of a special friend but I did not know any of the other guests (except Robbie). The journey to Tamworth seemed endless, mainly because there was a woman opposite us who loved the sound of her own voice. I saw her travelling companion nod a couple of times, but other than that it was a monologue and she hardly paused for breath. The whole carriage was forced to listen to her talking about the problems she is having with her computer, the difficulty of getting used to a new phone and the problems she had encountered when buying a car. I was getting increasingly agitated, she was the sort of person who gives women a bad name, she could have solved all those problems herself if she had shut up and given herself time to think!
I was thankful to arrive at Tamworth and leave the woman on the train to bore her fellow passengers all the way to Crewe. A quick visit to the Ladies did nothing to lift my mood, it was grim. It didn't look especially old but it was dirty and smelly. I was able to lock the door but as there was no door handle the only way to get out was to hook my finger through a hole in the door (where a previous lock had been fitted) and pull the door open. There was no hot water and it was clear that there had been nothing but cold water for some time because the knob had been removed from the water heater. I put my now cold wet hands under the dryer to find that it made an interesting noise but it didn't work so I gave up and left with my hands still wet. Is this really what we should expect from a modern railway?
At that point we left the real world behind for the day and began a rather special adventure. The birthday boy was waiting to meet us outside the station and we boarded a lovely old Midland Red bus and headed for the top floor. The conductor who looked a bit like Pte Godfrey from Dad's Army came upstairs and issued us with a ticket (in old money of course) and the journey back in time began. The tickets were narrow strips of paper similar to those used by United Counties buses in my childhood, the Northampton Transport buses that I remember more clearly issued small square tickets of different colours depending on the fare paid.
I had not travelled on top of a double decker bus since, well lets just say for more years than I care to admit. I had forgotten how much fun it was and how much you could see. The seats were surprisingly comfortable and practical, better than those on the only modern bus I have travelled on recently. There was one concession to the modern world that I was very grateful for - the 'no smoking' rule. In my childhood the top of a bus was a fog of cigarette smoke, how times have changed.
The bus took us to Birmingham to pick up more guests and then on to Kidderminster. I was really surprised, I am not really a 'bus person' and I hadn't expected to like it, but I loved every minute of it. We pulled up outside the station and I couldn't wait for the next part of our adventure. We had plenty of time to explore the station but with two bookshops I could have spent the entire day there! A visit to the toilets proved that it is possible to provide clean, pleasant, functional facilities - so why do so many stations struggle to meet even the most basic standards?
We had a lovely cup of tea (or in Robbie's case, coffee) at the cafe next to the museum and bookshop. I couldn't drink it fast enough, I couldn't wait to look at everything. I loved the bookshop, I bought a book about old stations in Northamptonshire and the Soke of Peterborough and a book about Ivor the Engine - I love Ivor the Engine and I want to share Ivor stories with my nephew Oliver. I wish they would do a dvd with all the Ivor the Engine episodes on it, it is the irreplaceable voice of Oliver Postgate that makes Ivor extra special.
Robbie made most of his purchases at the other book stall, a couple of 'train spotter' type stock books and a pile of lovely train photos. When he found the photos he got so excited that he almost jumped up and down with pleasure. Before long it was time for us all to meet up ready to catch our charter train. The birthday boy was running around like a demented sheepdog looking for two stragglers while most of us stood around chatting. My 'weird magnet' was working well, a little man (he was considerably shorter than me) entered the station area from the platform and marched straight up to me, shook my hand and launched in to a long explanation of why steam trains are better than diesels. I didn't tell him how much I like diesels or the conversation would have lasted all day. Suddenly he stopped talking about trains, informed me that he had important things to do and marched off in the direction of the refreshment room. I think Robbie was quite shocked.
When we arrived at Bridgnorth we had time to go and explore. Robbie and some of the others went off to experience the funicular railway. I had to choose between the bookshop and Robbie and the bookshop won hands down! I now have a wish list of books that I want. After exploring the station I got back to the train in time to have a chat with one of the other guests, then the others came back and it was time to head back to Kidderminster. We had profiteroles on the way back, they were lovely, much lighter than usual and we finished off with a nice cup of tea. I know that this was an extra special trip, but if on-board catering can be this good it seems a shame that Cross Country can't even master the art of making a drinkable cup of tea!
All too soon we were back at Kidderminster and boarding the bus back to Birmingham. For me the best part of the day was the people, it may sound odd to say that I felt totally at ease when I was with a bunch of people that I didn't know but that is exactly how it felt. It really was a lovely day and I will remember it for a very long time.

Still Fantastic at Fifty
Everyone knows about Robbie's passion for Deltics in general and Royal Scots Grey in particular. It is not hard to see why he loves Deltics so much, the power, the sound, the shape, they are awesome. The Deltics are celebrating their 50th birthday in style this year, there have been many special events and Robbie has been able to enjoy his beloved Royal Scots Grey on several occasions, but this has to be the highlight of the year. They still look fantastic at fifty!

Age is a high price to pay for maturity.
I have been asked that question a number of times in the last few weeks. My birthday was coming up and for some obscure reason people seem to think that it is cause to celebrate. It is a really difficult question to answer, because I really don't want anything. We have far too many 'things' already and there is nothing that I really need and I can't have the things I would really like.
More than anything I would like to be able to turn back time. Not to get rid of the wrinkles or because I am worried about my grey hairs, I don't care that much about either of those things. After all living with Robbie is bound to cause a few grey hairs - OK, I admit to more than a few grey hairs! I would like to turn back time because there are people who aren't here that should be and you can't help wishing that things could be different. Anyway things change, and I have to hang on to the fact that there are important people in my life now, such as my lovely nephews and niece who would be there if I turned back time. I guess the moral is that you have to live in the present and enjoy the people and things in your life now, then at least you carry special memories into the future with you.
I think my best ever birthday present was probably my first pony Geme. He had such a character and there was a very special bond between us for the rest of his life. The bond that develops between a young rider and her pony is very special. It is not the relationship with a dog or other pet because it involves a different level of trust and understanding. It is difficult to explain the closeness between horse and rider, it is not just an emotional bond, it is a physical communication. The rider understands and responds to every movement of the horse and the horse recognises and reacts to the movements and signals of the rider. The partnership depends on a large degree of trust and respect.
The joy of riding and the feeling of being at one with the pony brings a lot of pleasure, the thrill of cantering across a field and the gentler enjoyment of ambling along a lane in tune with the world around you. Horse riding gives you a lot of thinking time, it enables people to process thoughts and mull over problems, riding is good for your soul as well as for your mind and body.
I think my best birthday present as an adult was a video that I was given on my 41st birthday. My husband had borrowed some old cine film from my mum and had it transferred to video. I'd never seen the footage before and when I watched it I was confronted with my younger self laughing, playing and enjoying life. I was a spectator at my own first birthday party and I saw my grandmothers and my dad alive and well doing all the ordinary things that I only half remembered. Watching the video was a very emotional experience, but it was so precious, it was like being given back a little bit of my past.

How to Transport a Banana?
Yesterday Robbie and I went shopping to buy birthday presents for my daughter who will be 20 very soon. It gets harder to choose presents as they get older, I have fond memories of the days when the whole thing could be sorted in one trip to Toys R Us. We went to Home Sense to look for a couple of items that I can't name here for obvious reasons. I thought I was fairly safe taking Robbie to a shop that sells household goods but as so often when it comes to Robbie I was wrong!
The first thing that he spotted was a large and truly hideous clock that he thought would look perfect in our lounge - believe me it wouldn't! He was just on the cusp of a strop, the bottom lip started to jut out and he gave me the look so I thought it would be best to distract him by heading up to the cookware department. As we got to the top of the stairs I realised that I had to keep him away from the bed linen section because they had Kath Kidston designs and he would want to buy a new duvet set if he saw it, he loves Kath Kidston designs. Amazingly I managed to avoid that section, but that didn't keep him out of trouble.
I was looking at the baking section when in his usual loud voice he called to me to say that he needed a banana carrier. I tried to ignore it but that just made him louder, he informed anyone listening that he has been having a lot of trouble with his bananas getting bruised! It was a pointless conversation because they didn't sell banana cases, but once he got going he wouldn't shut up. Thankfully his attention was taken up with a two book set about the history of Lego and Lego Mini Figures. He was so excited that it was embarrassing, I agreed to buy him the book in the hope that it would keep him quiet.
When we got home he started researching banana carriers. He informed me that you can buy blow up ones that look really good. I informed him that there was no way that he was having a blow up banana carrier because he would probably get himself arrested. Just in case he was in any doubt I made it absolutely clear that if he bought a banana carrier I had no intention of taking a tape measure to Morrisons with me to find bananas of the correct shape and size!!

The Secret is Out
The long silence on the blog has been partly due to me working on a top secret project. It was Robbie’s birthday yesterday and I wanted to do something special and totally unique for him, so as well as buying him several presents I made him a couple of wooden items too. Robbie is passionate about pens and pencils so it seemed like a good idea to make him a pencil box and pencil holder. The pencil holder is shaped like a pencil and I have decorated it in a fair approximation of the Cross Country Trains colours, the pencil box was much more sober and sensible! I made up for the sober and sensible with a rather naught set of nesting dolls which I am certainly not going to display on the blog – but they brought a smile to Robbie’s face! It took a lot of work but I was very pleased with the way they turned out – I am going to make him a railway related set next.
Robbie got lots of other presents including his favourite aftershave, an external hard drive, a rather special tin of Starbucks coffee, a coin purse and an alarm clock and radio in the shape of Lego bricks. So, he is another year older but I wonder if this birthday has made him any wiser!

A Question of Gender
Robbie phoned me from work today, just to say hello and to tell me about his day. He has something of the Reginald Perrin about him and he always provides me with a detailed account of his journey to work, paying special attention to any delays and the exact time of arrival. Today he told me that he would be having coffee with a friend of his on 28th Feb. I think it was mentioning the date that set him off, he told me that there was a very important birthday on 28th. After a brief moment of panic, I informed him that no one in our family had a birthday on that day. He told me that the most important female in his life would be 50 on that day. I said that he must have a secret woman because none of the women I could think of would be 50 any time soon. I was only mildly surprised when he said that he was talking about his favourite Deltic, Royal Scots Grey! he told me that all engines are female. He may know a lot about trains but he is wrong about that. My favourite engine is male and he was 50 in 2009, his name is Ivor, whoever heard of a girl called Ivor!!

Where Did The Time Go?
It was Emily's 22nd birthday yesterday. Birthdays tend to make you notice the passing of time and I found myself wondering where all the years had gone. I can remember Emily as a little girl so clearly that in one way it seems like no time at all since she was a confident, articulate and inquisitive little girl, yet when I stop to think back it feels as if those those days are so remote that they are part of a different lifetime. I am so glad that we took time to enjoy life and have fun with our children when they were young, and also that we enjoyed each and every milestone of their childhood. Emily has grown into a lovely young woman, I am very proud of her and her brother and sister, and now that they are grown up they bring me every bit as much happiness as when they were little. If I had one piece of advice to pass on to my children it would be not to put off living because you are too busy or because you don't have enough money. Enjoy the time that you have now and the people in your life now because things change so quickly. You can't make time stand still, but you can take a wealth of happy memories with you into the future.

Birthday Girl

Wednesday 2nd June
Laura's long awaited birthday turned out to be a beautiful day. The sun streamed into the bedroom and woke me up rather earlier than I had planned, so I wandered through to the kitchen to make a drink. I love those quite stolen moments before the day begins, I pulled back the blinds and gazed out across the bay as the day was waking up. If I could freeze time it would be a moment like this in May or June when the days are long and the promise of summer stretches ahead.
Before long Laura got up and Robbie who has 'man flu' shuffled into the lounge to suffer in comfort. I shouldn't be unkind, he really does have a bad cold and it is especially miserable to feel unwell when you are on holiday. I had set all Laura's presents out on the dressing table and in a few short minutes the parcels which had been so lovingly wrapped had all be opened. Laura got money, jewelery, some Hello Kitty toys and several DVDs, including Top Gear, Loose Women and Outnumbered. She seemed very happy with the DVDs so at least I got something right. Her main present was a bracelet, she seems to like that too. I can't help wondering where those nineteen years went, suddenly I feel very old.

We spent the day on the beach, it was lovely, but I was very careful not to get too much sun. Laura is very lucky to be able to spend her birthday on the beach. We went out for a meal this evening, it was a lovely family time, I wish Emily had been with us but at least we were able to phone her.

Late Again!
Robbie was late home last night, I couldn't believe that he would be late even on his birthday, but he said he had to sort out some diagrams. His train didn't even get in until about quarter to nine, so by the time he was home and settled the evening was gone. He was delighted with his presents especially the railway book about British Rail Mk2 coaches that my mum bought for him. I bought him a number of bits and bobs as well as his real presents, he loved the little Lego man keyring with lights in his feet and he even got excited about the big b,ox of Smarties!

Birthday Boy
It is Robbie's birthday today, he is 38. We celebrated his birthday yesterday because we will hardly see each other today. We had a lovely family day at my mums, she cooked his favourite meal for him, he is still not fully back to normal in terms of eating but he enjoyed the day. This morning he opened some of his presents and cards including the (rather loud) cuff links that he had been lusting after, but he still has a couple of presents to open this evening. Mum made him a rather wonderful birthday cake, but he wouldn't blow out the candles yesterday because he sad it was bad luck to do it early. It was certainly bad luck for everyone else because we all wanted some cake and now we have to wait until this evening!

Birthday Girl

It has been a busy weekend, it was Emily's 21st birthday on Sunday and she went out to celebrate with all her friends on Saturday evening. It is nice that she is still in touch with many of her old friends from school, her work friends went out with her too. She had already had an evening out with her university friends on Thursday so she managed to stretch her birthday over several days!
I bought Emily a ring for her birthday, she loves rings. I also bought her a very posh jewellery box, some Dr Who DVDs and the full set of Round The Twist DVDs (one of her favourite TV series when she was younger). She had lots of lovely presents and we had a really nice family day, we spent the afternoon with her grandparents and she was able to talk to other relatives on the phone. I think she enjoyed her birthday.

Going Green
It was Sam's birthday on Sunday. He had a nice day doing the things that he wanted to do despite his bruised and painful face, the bruises have come out now and his face looks very colourful. He doesn't like it because it draws attention to him, but hopefully the bruises will not last too long.
Several weeks ago Sam provided me with a neatly typed list of items that would like for his birthday and Christmas. I was very impressed, the list was organised under different sub headings and it included clothes, cds, dvds and gadgets. If only his school work was that well presented!
One of the things that he wanted most of all was a pair of dark green Converse boots, it sounds simple enough but it proved very difficult to find any at a reasonable price. I finally found a pair for £35, it seems a lot to pay for a pair of canvas shoes, but he was delighted with them and he has worn them every day since he got them. He had lots of other things too including a shopping trip with his sisters and a large sum of money to spend on clothes. He chose some very nice things and he looks very good in them.
Poor old Sam, it can't be fun having a birthday and Christmas in the same week, I really should have planned it better.

How Could They Do That?
Sam will be 15 at the weekend, he has been looking forward to a shopping trip to town to buy clothes with his birthday money, but now it looks as if all that will have to be put on hold. Yesterday on his way home from school he was badly beaten up by three men aged about 18 or 19. They wanted his phone and they punched and kicked him between 15 and 20 times around his face and head. He was so upset and frightened that when he rang me I found it very hard to understand what had happened and where he was. Emily and I went straight out to find him but it took a while to locate him. He was in such a state that I took him straight to the surgery to be checked over by the doctor. His face was already badly swollen and very painful, and the inside of his mouth was badly cut, but the doctor hopes that no bones are broken. There is a possibility that his nose is broken and there is some concern about the damage to his right cheek, but nothing can be done about that for a couple of weeks until the swelling has gone down. The police came out to take a statement from him and they are sending someone out to photograph his injuries today. Poor old Sam, I really hope this doesn't spoil his Birthday and Christmas for him.

Grounds for Divorce!
I'm finally starting to feel better after the swine flu jab, it made me feel really rough, but I expect it is a lot better to have the jab than to risk getting swine flu. I really need to get organised now, I still have so much to do before Christmas and it seems as if the days are just rushing past. I have Sam's birthday to think about too, poor Sam, it is no fun having your birthday and Christmas in the same week. I asked him for ideas about what presents he would like and he presented me with a neatly typed page of A4 paper with his wish list neatly divided into categories - if only he put that much effort into his homework! So now I know what he wants, but I will need a second mortgage to afford it all! Robbie's wish list is truly scary among other things he wants some Dr Marten boots with union jack toe caps - no way! I put up with him wearing bright colours and lurid patterns but the union jack toe caps are a step to far, it would be grounds for divorce! He will have to settle for something a little more sober, after all he is not far off 40, it's time he grew up!

A Big Mistake
I think I have mentioned before that I wear contact lenses but I often don't put them in until I need to go out. On Sunday morning I was in a bit of a hurry because I needed to pick Sam up from church and then we were all going to my mums for a belated birthday celebration for my step father. As often happens the time rushed past, I'd been busy writing an article, then suddenly I noticed the time and I had to rush to have my bath and get ready. I decided to wear my jeans, they are too big really but they are ideal for going to mum's because her dogs jump all over me. I got dressed and rushed downstairs, but when I put my boots on I noticed that I kept treading on the back of the trousers, they seemed to have grown in the wash. Closer inspection revealed my mistake - they were Robbie's jeans! As they say, more haste less speed.
