New Year Madness in the Rail Industry 29.12.07

I have never been very impressed by the way this country bestows honours, but the publication of the New Year Honours List has convinced me that the world has gone totally mad. Ian McAllister chairman, Network Rail has been given a knighthood for services to transport! What services? As if the shambles at Network Rail isn't enough to blacklist him from any thought of an honour, he used to be Chairman and Managing Director of Ford - and you all know what I think about what passes for customer service at Ford!!

Virgin Trains have certainly got plenty of publicity regarding their complaint about Network Rail extending the engineering works at Rugby on New Year's Eve. I was listening to the news on Radio 4 at lunchtime and a Virgin spokesman called Ken Gibbs spoke about the disruption to passengers that Network Rail's action will cause. I hope Virgin's complaint to the Office of Rail Regulation is upheld, but I think Chris Gibb needs to have a bit of a rethink regarding the choice of people who speak on behalf of Virgin. However competent and knowledgeable they are, they lose all credibility if the spokesman sounds as if he should be doing voice overs for cartoon characters!
