Green Balls 05.07.07

I was really tired last night and I went to bed before Robbie. Some time later Robbie trundled into the bedroom and woke me up to ask what the green balls that he had found were. I had been woken from sleep so the possibility of an unspeakable ailment didn’t occur to me; I thought he was moaning about tumble dryer balls again. I told him clearly and succinctly to go away, and I drifted back to sleep.

This morning I had woken Robbie at the right time, but when he returned with my cup of tea he was running so late that he would need to catch a later train. He asked again about the green balls in the kitchen, but I couldn’t imagine what he was talking about. He said that he had been downstairs looking at them and trying to work out what they were. He said that at first he thought they were boiled sweets, but they were too soft. Then he wondered if they were some sort of grapes but they were too hard. At that point I realised that he was talking about gooseberries! I am going to make a gooseberry crumble and I had left the gooseberries in the kitchen. Believe it or not Robbie has never seen a real live gooseberry before.
