Yesterday was one of those odd days that only come along a few times during a lifetime. It was my last day at work after 21 years with the same company, but during that time I have done several different jobs. I felt as if I was standing with one foot in the past and the other firmly planted in the future. After such a long time I have a great loyalty to the company and to the work they do and it will feel strange not to be involved anymore, but I also feel quite excited about doing something different and exploring new opportunities. Most of all I will miss the people, I met some really amazing people over the years and I have some very happy memories - as well as one or two of the other kind! I have two weeks holiday in Norfolk to look forward to and it will be wonderful to be able to enjoy it without those nagging thoughts about how much work is building up in my absence - someone else can worry about that now!
Robbie had promised faithfully to be home on time this evening, but he rang me to say that he would be delayed at work, I had another call to say he was on his way, then he phoned to say he was delayed at Birmingham International, my patients slowly ebbed away and when he rang to say the service was cancelled I was ready to scream. We had loads to do to get ready to go on holiday and I could feel the time slipping through my fingers. Robbie finally got back to Northampton at 11pm and guess what - he had to tell me all about his eventful journey in excruciating detail! He was still talking about all things railway when I went to bed.
